I ALWAYS STRUGGLE WHEN THE SEASONS CHANGE.
Just like now as Summer slips into Autumn. Since the clocks recently ‘fell back’ I’m finding it hard to get out of bed, my usual high energy levels have taken a dip, I’m wanting to withdraw inwards and I’m craving warming comfort foods.
Is this just me or have you noticed it too?
I know it’ll take me a few days (weeks?!) to readjust to this change of season, but I’ve decided, rather than try to maintain the same crazy Summer schedule of multiple activities packed into each day, I’m going to let nature take the driving seat (for once in my life!) and listen to my body as I navigate the seasonal change by welcoming in all the good things that the slower, cooler days of Autumn has to offer.
So, once I’ve changed my wardrobe from Summer clothes to Winter woolies, I’m going to allow myself to embrace the offerings of Autumns. So, I’m going to let myself slow down a little (& not feel guilty!), to just sit & ponder, to journal, make Turmeric almond milk lattes, go hiking, watch the soft sunrises & the glorious sunsets, to bake, sleep and, (most importantly), reconnect with friends and family who’ve had to take a back seat whilst I’ve been busy running our yoga retreats.
Oh & of course, change my yoga practice to a slower, nourishing, restorative practice and enjoy some yoga nidra too. I can’t wait .. having permission (from myself) to slow down & just ‘be’!
If you too have had a busy Summer and you feel like you’re running out of steam, rather than push yourself to go hard at the gym or choose a hot & sweaty vinyasa yoga class (because you think these will help kick you out of the ‘funk’ you’re feeling?!) now’s the time to find a practice (or exercise) that nourishes you on every level, one that helps you get a little quieter on the inside so that you can tune into the underlying currents of your life at this very moment and tap into what is truly going to serve you in the coming months.
I do hope that you too will have an opportunity soon to turn inwards and listen to what your body tells you it really needs right now. As, whilst most of us haven’t lost our minds, we lost our bodies long ago.
I wanted to write this post as a way to remind us that, just like the natural world, we too are affected by seasonal change. If we try & maintain the high energy of Summer when, in all honesty, our bodies want to hibernate, we will burn out. So let’s respect this rise & fall in our energy and honour the inner voice that wants us to modify our daily life to bring us in harmony with the invisible rhythms of the season. Maintaining a regular yoga and/or meditation practice at this time will most definitely help you adapt to the change of seasons.
